Extension rules for tourism
Rules of the Thai Immigration Bureau. Checked on 17 October 2026.
Requirements change. We check them against official sources before every application.
-
Visa-exempt or tourist visa entry
An extension on tourism grounds is available if you entered under the visa exemption scheme or on a tourist visa.
-
Once, for up to 30 days
The extension is granted once and for no more than 30 days from the date your current permission expires. For citizens of India, Sri Lanka, Pakistan and a few other countries, it is no more than 7 days.
-
The officer decides
An extension is not automatic: it is solely at the discretion of the immigration officer. That is why a complete, accurate package matters.
-
In person, at your local office
You apply in person at the immigration office for the area where you live. According to the service guide, offices are open on weekdays from 8:30 to 16:30 with a lunch break, except public holidays. Hours at a particular office may differ.
-
The 1,900 THB fee is non-refundable
You pay the fee when you apply. If the extension is refused, the fee is not returned.

-
Address notification (TM.30)
Your landlord or hotel must notify immigration within 24 hours of your check-in. The TM.7 form asks for your address in Thailand, so we check that the notification has been filed.
-
Leaving without re-entry ends your stay
If you leave Thailand without a re-entry permit, your permission to stay is terminated. A re-entry permit costs 1,000 THB (single) or 3,800 THB (multiple).
-
Changing visa type is a separate procedure
You can switch from visa-exempt entry or a tourist visa to a Non-Immigrant visa inside Thailand only on grounds listed by the Immigration Bureau, such as work, study, family or retirement at 50+. The fee for issuing or changing to a single-entry Non-Immigrant visa is 2,000 THB.

Frequently asked questions
Can I extend my visa-exempt stay again after the extra 30 days?
Usually not: after the extension you need to leave the country or change your status. We will suggest a legal option for your situation.
I entered before 15 September — do I have 30 or 60 days?
If you entered before 15 September 2026, the previous rules apply. Your permitted stay is shown in your entry stamp — send us a photo and we will check.
Can I switch from visa-exempt entry to a long-term visa without leaving?
In some cases, yes — for example, to a Non-O visa based on marriage or retirement. It depends on your citizenship and grounds, so we will go through it at a consultation.
What if I have already overstayed?
The fine is 500 THB per day, up to 20,000 THB. A long overstay can lead to an entry ban. Message us right away — see our Overstay service.
Do I have to go to immigration in person?
As a rule, yes: immigration needs your photo and signature. We prepare everything and go with you, so it takes as little of your time as possible.
How much will it cost in total?
Our fee plus the government fee. Both amounts are in the price table above, with no hidden charges.
Where and when do I go for the extension?
To the immigration office for the area where you live. According to the Immigration Bureau's service guide, offices are open Monday to Friday, 8:30–16:30 with a lunch break, except public holidays. Processing itself takes about 40 minutes once a complete package is accepted — not counting the queue.
Can I apply for the extension online?
Yes, if you live in Bangkok: the e-Extension system accepts applications for tourism and 11 other grounds. You upload the form and documents online, and the review takes 1 to 7 working days. You still have to come in person for the visa sticker — to Division 1 at Chaeng Wattana, which takes 5–10 minutes. We will tell you whether online filing works for your case.
Will my extension survive a trip abroad?
Not unless you get a re-entry permit before you leave. Without one, your permission to stay ends when you depart. The fee is 1,000 THB for a single and 3,800 THB for a multiple re-entry permit.
Can I extend my stay for reasons other than tourism — for example, medical treatment?
The Immigration Bureau also considers other grounds: medical treatment or caring for a patient, visiting a Thai spouse or children, and taking part in a court case. Under the Bureau's rules, a visit to a Thai spouse or children is extended once for up to 60 days, and medical treatment or a court case for up to 90 days per permission. Each ground needs its own documents — see the checklist on this page. We will check at a consultation whether a ground fits your case.
