Frequently asked questions
How long can I stay in Thailand on a DTV?
Up to 180 days per entry; the visa is valid for 5 years. You can extend your stay once at immigration.
Can I work for a Thai company on a DTV?
No. The DTV is for remote work for an employer or clients outside Thailand, and for soft power programmes. To work in Thailand you need a Non-B visa and a work permit.
Where do I apply if I already live in Thailand?
Under the new rules, in your country of citizenship or in the country where you hold residence. We will go through your case at a consultation.
How much money do I need in my account?
At least 500,000 THB or the equivalent, shown on a bank statement. We check the statement before you apply.
Will a bank open an account for me on a DTV?
Many banks are cautious with DTV holders right now. We can help with the bank — see our Bank account service.
Do I need to pay tax in Thailand?
If you spend 180 days or more a year in Thailand and bring income into the country, you may have tax obligations. We can advise you.
Which police clearance certificate is accepted?
One from your country of nationality or from the country where you apply. How recent it must be depends on the consulate: the embassy in London, for example, accepts certificates issued within 6 months before you apply. When applying in Moscow, a certificate in Russian must be translated into English and notarised. We confirm your consulate's rules before you apply.
Can my family get a DTV too?
Yes. The spouse and children under 20 of a DTV holder can apply as family members. They need the main holder's DTV, a marriage, birth or adoption certificate, bank statements and a police clearance certificate. When applying in Moscow, children also need a notarised copy of the birth certificate and, if they travel without a parent or with only one parent, notarised consent to travel from a parent or legal guardian.
What happens when my 180 days run out?
You can extend each stay once at immigration, by up to 180 days. After that you leave Thailand and re-enter on the same visa while it is still valid. We remind you about the dates in advance.
How much is the consular fee, and is it refunded if I am refused?
The Thai Ministry of Foreign Affairs checklist gives 10,000 THB. Each embassy sets the amount in its own currency: 350 USD in Moscow, £300 in London. The fee is not refunded, even if the visa is refused, which is why we check your documents before you apply.
