Where couples lose time

  1. 01

    30 visa-free days go fast.

Since 15 September 2026 the visa exemption is 30 days. You can change to a marriage-based Non-O inside Thailand only while more than 15 days of your stay remain and you have not overstayed. That is why we plan the marriage registration from day one.

  2. 02

The embassy letter is the first hurdle.

The Amphur registers the marriage based on a letter from your embassy confirming you are not married. The registrar interviews you both in detail and may refuse if they believe the marriage is a sham.

  3. 03

The money must sit for 2 months.

For the extension, a foreign husband of a Thai wife needs at least 400,000 THB in a Thai bank for the past 2 months, or an income of 40,000 THB a month. Depositing the money a week before you apply will not work.

    Source: Immigration Division 1 (Bangkok)

  4. 04

Leaving without a re-entry permit cancels your extension.

If you leave Thailand without a re-entry permit, your permission to stay ends. A re-entry permit costs 1,000 THB (single) or 3,800 THB (multiple).

Requirements for a marriage visa

Based on the checklists of Immigration Division 1 (Bangkok), the Thai Ministry of Interior and the Ministry of Foreign Affairs, checked on 17 October 2026. Immigration offices in other provinces may ask for extra documents.

Requirements change. We check them against official sources before every application.

  • A legally registered marriage

Your marriage must be registered in Thailand (Kor Ror 2 and Kor Ror 3), or registered abroad and recorded in the Thai register (Kor Ror 22). Immigration checks that the marriage is genuine, not just on paper.

  • A Non-O visa first

The 1-year extension is only granted if you hold a Non-O visa. You get it at a Thai embassy or by changing your status inside Thailand.

    Source: Immigration Division 1 (Bangkok)

  • Change status more than 15 days ahead

You can apply for a Non-O inside Thailand while more than 15 days of your permitted stay remain. If you have overstayed, you cannot apply. The fee is 2,000 THB and the permission is for up to 90 days.

    Source: Immigration Division 1 (Bangkok)

  • 400,000 THB or 40,000 THB a month

For a foreign husband of a Thai wife: an income of at least 40,000 THB a month, or at least 400,000 THB in a Thai bank for the past 2 months, or income and savings together of 400,000 THB a year. The passbook copy is updated on the day you apply.

    Source: Immigration Division 1 (Bangkok)

  • Interview and photos of your home

Both spouses attend immigration in person. You need 4 family photos (2 outside the house, 2 inside) and a map of your home.

    Source: Immigration Division 1 (Bangkok)

  • Up to 1 year, 1,900 THB fee

Each extension is granted for no more than one year, then you renew. The extension fee is not refunded under any circumstances.

    Source: Immigration Division 1 (Bangkok)

  • A report every 90 days

You confirm your address with immigration within 15 days before the due date or 7 days after it. Reporting late means a 2,000 THB fine.

  • Same-sex couples

Thailand's Marriage Equality Act has been in force since 23 January 2025, so same-sex couples can register their marriage too.

Frequently asked questions

What comes first — the marriage or the visa?

The marriage. For a Non-O and the extension you need a Thai marriage certificate (Kor Ror 3), or a foreign certificate recorded in the Thai register (Kor Ror 22). We plan the registration so you still have time to change your status.

What documents does the foreign partner need to register the marriage?

Your passport and a letter from your embassy confirming you are not married. The letter is translated into Thai and legalised by the Thai Ministry of Foreign Affairs. If you were married before, bring proof of divorce or your former spouse's death. If either partner is under 20, parental consent is needed. The Thai partner needs their ID card. You also need two witnesses — one for each partner.

How much does MFA legalisation cost and how long does it take?

At the Legalization Division of the Department of Consular Affairs in Bangkok (Chaeng Watthana Road) it is 200 THB per legalisation, ready in 3 business days counting the day you submit. Same-day express service is 400 THB. You book online at qlegal.consular.go.th. Your embassy charges its own fee for the letter.

Can I change from visa-exempt entry to a Non-O without leaving Thailand?

Yes, if your marriage is already registered. Under the Bangkok immigration checklist you apply while more than 15 days of your stay remain and without any overstay. The fee is 2,000 THB and the Non-O gives you up to 90 days. Then you apply for the 1-year extension.

How much money do I need for the 1-year extension?

A foreign husband of a Thai wife needs an income of at least 40,000 THB a month, or at least 400,000 THB in a Thai bank for the past 2 months, or income and savings together of 400,000 THB a year. The passbook is updated on the day you apply. We check your statement in advance.

Does a foreign wife of a Thai husband need money in the bank?

The Immigration Division 1 (Bangkok) checklist lists no financial requirement for a foreign wife. You need the marriage documents, your husband's ID card, family photos and a lease. When changing to a Non-O, you also need your husband's employment certificate issued within the last month. Offices differ — we check yours.

Can same-sex couples register a marriage and get a visa?

Registering the marriage — yes: the Marriage Equality Act has been in force since 23 January 2025. We confirm your immigration office's visa requirements for same-sex couples before you apply.

What happens at the immigration interview?

Both spouses attend in person. The officer checks the originals, and you sign every copy. Immigration may ask for extra documents. We prepare the package, photos and home map and go with you.

Can I travel abroad on a marriage visa?

Yes, but get a re-entry permit first: 1,000 THB single or 3,800 THB multiple. Without it, your permission to stay ends. And don't miss your 90-day report: reporting late means a 2,000 THB fine.

Will the Apostille Convention change anything?

Thailand has joined the Convention, and it enters into force for Thailand on 28 February 2027. For now the current procedure applies: the letter for the Amphur is translated into Thai and legalised by the Thai Ministry of Foreign Affairs. We'll explain the new procedure once the Ministry publishes the rules.
