Why opening an account got harder
- 01
The wrong visa.
KBank does not open savings accounts for holders of a tourist visa, visa on arrival, visa exemption or DTV.

- 02
Every bank has its own list.
For a company account Bangkok Bank wants a DBD certificate issued within the last month; KBank accepts one up to 3 months old. Bangkok Bank's company current account opens from 20,000 THB; KBank has no minimum.

- 03
Stricter checks.
The Bank of Thailand and the banking associations have agreed to tighten customer checks: who you are and why you make each transaction.
- 04
New customers get a limit.
While the bank still knows little about you, mobile banking transfers may be capped at 50,000 THB a day.
What you need to open an account
Bank and Bank of Thailand rules, checked on 17 October 2026. The exact list depends on the bank and the branch.
Requirements change. We check them against official sources before every application.
-
A non-immigrant visa
KBank asks a foreigner for a non-immigrant visa — any type is accepted. It does not open accounts for holders of a tourist visa, visa on arrival, visa exemption or DTV.

-
Proof of why you are in Thailand
A work permit if you work in Thailand, or a certificate from your school or university. Plus a government-issued ID from your home country — for example a national ID card, driving licence or household registration.

An in-person visit in Thailand
Bangkok Bank does not open accounts from abroad — you visit a branch in Thailand. Non-resident baht accounts are opened only at its head office on Silom Road.
-
The bank can ask for more
Bangkok Bank and KBank both state that they may request additional documents. Bangkok Bank does not publish its list for foreigners and asks you to check it with a branch.

-
Company: a recent DBD certificate
A company registration certificate: at KBank with the annex on the company's objectives, no older than 3 months; at Bangkok Bank no older than 1 month. KBank also asks for the BOJ.5 shareholder list, Bangkok Bank for board minutes approving the account and naming the signatories.

-
Company: signatories attend in person
At KBank the payment signatory must visit a branch within 15 days of the application so the bank can record their specimen signature. A foreigner's passport must have at least 30 days of validity left.
-
Company: checks on related persons
KBank asks for documents of the authorised directors, signatories, shareholders with 15% or more and the managing director. A person whose account has been frozen as a mule account cannot open a new company account. For higher-risk companies the bank looks into the type of business, source of income and assets, and purpose of transactions.

Your account is for you only
Opening an account, or letting someone else use yours, for illegal transactions carries up to 3 years in prison, a fine of up to 300,000 THB, or both. Arranging, advertising or soliciting the purchase, sale, rental or lending of accounts carries 2 to 5 years, a fine of 200,000–500,000 THB, or both.

Frequently asked questions
Can I open an account on a visa exemption or tourist visa?
Don't count on it. KBank, for example, states that it does not open accounts on a tourist visa, visa on arrival or visa exemption — it needs a non-immigrant visa. We can help you choose one.
What about a DTV?
KBank treats the DTV as a travel visa and does not open accounts for DTV holders. Other banks have their own rules, and they change, so we check the current position before your visit. If you need an account to live in Thailand, we can discuss changing your visa.
Can I open an account remotely, from abroad?
Not at Bangkok Bank: it opens accounts only when you visit a branch in Thailand in person. We prepare your documents in advance so you arrive with a complete file.
What does a Thai company need for an account?
At KBank: a DBD certificate no older than 3 months, the BOJ.5 shareholder list, and passports of the authorised directors, signatories and shareholders with 15% or more. At Bangkok Bank: a certificate no older than 1 month and board minutes approving the account and naming the signatories. At KBank the payment signatory must visit a branch within 15 days of the application.
Why does my new account have a low transfer limit?
Under Bank of Thailand measures, banks set a daily transfer limit for individual customers on mobile and internet banking based on their profile: up to 50,000 THB, up to 200,000 THB, or higher. A new customer the bank does not yet know well may start at the lowest level. You can ask for a higher limit at a branch or through the call centre; the bank may ask for documents such as a work permit or a salary slip.
Can I open a foreign currency account?
Yes, an FCD account. Terms differ by bank: at KBank a non-resident needs at least 5,000 USD for an FCD savings account and pays 10 USD a month if the balance falls below that. At Krungsri an individual can open an FCD account from 100 USD. You can deposit foreign cash of up to 15,000 USD a day, or up to the amount on your customs declaration.
How safe is my money in the account?
Baht deposits are protected by the Deposit Protection Agency up to 1 million THB per depositor per bank. If a bank loses its licence, the payout is made within 30 days. Foreign currency (FCD) deposits are not covered.
Can I withdraw a large amount in cash?
Since 1 April 2026, to withdraw 5 million THB or more in cash at a branch you must confirm your identity and occupation and explain the purpose, with documents if you have them. Otherwise the bank will not pay out the cash. Transfers of the same amount go through as normal, and the account is not frozen.
A friend suggests opening an account in his name, or borrowing mine. Is that OK?
No. Opening an account or letting it be used for illegal transactions carries up to 3 years in prison, a fine of up to 300,000 THB, or both. Anyone arranging the sale, purchase or rental of accounts faces 2 to 5 years, a fine of 200,000–500,000 THB, or both. Banks block electronic channels on mule accounts and may refuse the owner a new account, personal or corporate.
Can a foreign company open an account?
Yes — for example, a foreign currency account at KBank. You need the certificate of registration, articles of association (if any), a resolution to open the account, the shareholder list and passports of the directors, authorised persons and shareholders with 15% or more. Documents must be in Thai or English or come with a certified translation, and be certified by a notary public at the embassy or consulate of the country concerned.
